Wonder by R.J. Palacio was published by Knopf in January 2012
Wonder tells the story of August, or 'Auggie' who is a ten year old kid who is obsessed with Star Wars, laughs at the word butt, and loves his dog. However, he was born with an abnormality on his face which has caused him to undergo many surgeries all throughout his childhood. Because of this, he never attended school. The novel starts at a point where his mum thinks he should be enrolled into Middle School.
I originally picked this up because it kept getting placed next to The Fault in Our Stars in bookshops because of the blue and white feel, you know? And I kept looking at it because that cover is oh so intriguing and so, one day, I just threw my stuff down and bought it. That was the best decision I've ever made.
August as a narrator is hilarious, constantly cracking jokes about himself to try and break through some of the tension and lighten the mood of others. He empathises with them in a way; he understands that other people are going to feel a bit awkward around him - which is amazing really, considering he's only ten.
The novel actually has multiple narrators and we're able to see some of the chapters through family members such as Olivia (his sister), as well as through the eyes of his friends Jack and Summer. This was pretty interesting as it allowed us to see the same situation through different perspectives which gave us more insight into the characters.
Speaking of, the character development is thorough and very well done and it was the kind of book where you worry about how the characters are doing, days after you've turned that final page. I've been reading a lot of books lately that are just okay. Books where I'm not feeling too attached to the characters and the plot just isn't reeling me in. Wonder was a refreshing change with a raw honesty that I appreciated greatly.
Essentially, it's the story of a kid who has to learn way too early that the world, sometimes, is a bit shitty. But he accepts that, moves on from that and kicks ass whilst he's at it.
I can't recommend this book highly enough so instead I will just leave the link to where you can buy it on the book depository
Best wishes, and dftba
