This short novella was given away as an E-book during the
2010 Project for Awesome, a charity event run by the Vlogbrothers in which youtube users donate and make videos about their favourite non-profits. It feels slightly strange reviewing this, as
it was never really meant to be read! In the preface, John Green describes it
as a “bad zombie apocalypse novella” and a “steaming mess of prose”, which
should give you some idea what we’re up against!
I feel privileged to say that I have a physical copy which I
picked up at Leakycon 2014, with thanks to the HPA Apparating Library and Greg
(The Nobel Helium) for having it printed and bound.
At 72 pages, I slipped it sneakily in between two lectures
and blasted through it in one sitting, and I have to say, it’s not as bad as
John honourably claims.
Mia lives in the Chicago of the future, which is infested
with Zombie’s, or Z’s who spread the disease by corn. (As a side note, I’ve
only just realised that Z’s is pronounced ‘zee’, not ‘zed’, which seems to make
a lot more sense in my little English head.) Right, so Mia runs into another
girl, Caroline, who finds pleasure in killing the Z’s. Both characters were
very interesting, and whilst the plot is patchy and disjointed which was
expected, it’s still easy to follow and quite exciting! Groundbreaking moral
questions about how we could ever kill another human are interwoven into the
plot, keeping the reader enticed.
In summary, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a
novel about Unicorns.
I would recommend it if you’re looking for a kinda funny, you-can-see-it-happening-if-you-were-in-their-situation sort of zombie apocalypse novella!
